Print Shop Painting/Reorganization Complete

Because we were closed last year we decided it was an opportunity to paint the inside of the print shop. The outside of the building was painted in the summer of 2020 sealing the battens that had allowed moisture to seep through and stain the inside walls so it was logical to paint the inside next. It’s a major disruption to do so because heavy type cabinets had to be moved around to access the walls, so it also made sense to look at the space, which we have been adding things to for years and find a better way for it all to work together.

Planned for the fall of 2020, work actually finally started in late spring of 2021 when we were looking to open in a few months. Most was completed by the time we opened in June and the last wall, which didn’t require much to be moved was finally completed last week.

ATF Instruction Card Frame/Holder

I made a frame that holds all 24 APA Instruction Cards and displays whichever card you put in the front. They slide up through the top to remove or change. You can read more about the cards and download a set of your own here.

Re-Opening Planned

We plan to resume a Saturday morning schedule at the Print Shop starting June 5. Check the calendar for openings. All volunteers are invited to attend and should be prepared to wear masks if not vaccinated. Fully vaccinated volunteers are invited to wear or not wear them as they are comfortable. We do have improved circulation with our new shop layout.

Card printed last year to participate in a print exchange with members of the Chesapeake Chapter of the American Printing History Association.
Our first project back will be another card for a print exchange with APHA.

ATF Printing Instruction Cards

The International Printing Museum posted a couple of cards from this series and made me search further to find the series. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has an online display of almost all 24, but are missing #8. Here’s what they have.

Update: I found #8. It is the Case Layout card for a California Job Case. It was probably missing because it’s still tacked to the wall wherever the rest of the collection came from. Anyway, I put them all together in one PDF here.

APHA “Out of Sorts” Prints

Members of the Chesapeake Chapter of the American Printing History Association, which includes us, put together a collaborative packet of prints as a group activity to do together during Corona Virus lockdowns. Thanks to Lead Graffiti in Delaware for putting this video together.

Watch for our print with the ice cream cones. Also at the end is a screen capture of the Zoom meeting where the idea was discussed. As a bonus we have learned that the prints will enter the collection of the Smithsonian!
